Build a timeline before writing a football match review

Place goals, personnel changes and tactical shifts in sequence so that the final score does not erase the path to it.

Start with events you can verify

A useful association football review can begin as a simple timeline. Record confirmed goals, substitutions, dismissals and other significant events, with the period in which they happened. Use a reliable match record and avoid turning unseen or unconfirmed incidents into facts. This first pass answers what happened before attempting to explain why it happened. Keeping the two tasks separate reduces the temptation to build the entire account around a conclusion chosen in advance. It also makes later corrections easier to incorporate.

Ask what problem each phase presented

The opening period, the minutes after taking the lead and the phase after an equaliser may present different problems. Personnel changes can alter progression, pressure and protection behind an attack. Select complete sequences from each phase and examine whether the earlier problem actually changed. A goal arriving after a substitution does not prove that the substitution was its sole cause. The opponent’s response, the execution of a particular move and normal variation can all form part of the explanation. Sequence provides context; it does not automatically establish causation.

Make the conclusion point to evidence

Phrases such as total control or sudden collapse can compress several different phases into one dramatic label. A more informative review identifies the period, the connection in attack or defence that changed, and any examples that complicate the claim. The final score answers the result question. The timeline helps explain how the match reached that result. They should support one another without being treated as interchangeable. This method does not require inside knowledge or invented conversations, and it makes no assertion about a current match, coach or private dressing-room decision.
